The Bluebook Challenge

When Ross Guberman, our founder, set out to integrate AI-powered Bluebook corrections into BriefCatch, the challenge was clear: Could a machine truly understand the nuances of one of the most complex citation systems in the world? Many doubted it. But for Ross, this wasn’t just a technical puzzle—it was an opportunity to redefine how attorneys work.

The project began in early 2024 with a bold mission: to make the Bluebook more accessible while preserving the precise citation formatting attorneys depend on. The team started by converting the Bluebook into plain text and crafting specialized training data with the help of a team of true believers.

The real breakthrough came when they needed to move beyond off-the-shelf tools like Eyecite, which couldn’t accommodate the diversity of citation formats, and built a custom hybrid solution combining AI and regex. By September 2024, the team had scraped and labeled 25,000 citations from top law journals, paving the way for an innovative system tailored to legal writing’s exacting standards.

Now, this groundbreaking feature is set to transform how attorneys manage citations. Early users report that it identifies critical errors and updates, like abbreviation corrections, with unparalleled accuracy. This success isn’t just a testament to cutting-edge technology—it’s a reflection of Ross’s determination to tackle the hardest problem and create tools that take the drudgery out of legal practice.
