At BriefCatch, we always want you to have access to the most advanced legal-writing technology available. To that end, we have recently unveiled several optional features that leverage the power of artificial intelligence. Of course, whether to enable those features will always be your prerogative—they’re all turned off by default. We’ll continue to innovate; you stay in control. 

Our commitment to you is threefold:

1. You can always opt-out of AI features: BriefCatch’s AI features are completely optional. If AI features aren’t right for you, no problem! BriefCatch runs seamlessly without them. Continue polishing your prose with world-class edits from the BriefCatch you know and trust. 
2. You control AI access: BriefCatch gives you the tools to control who can access our AI features—whether it’s the full organization or an individual user. You have the autonomy to throttle AI access as needed. And don’t worry about accidental AI deployments—all of our AI features are defaulted off. They don’t work without your say so. 
3. Your data stays yours: BriefCatch doesn’t store your data, so no one can access your work product but you. The same is true with our AI features: your data will never be used to improve or train AI models. And our AI features are only deployed in a secure environment with enterprise-grade encryption.

BriefCatch Editing with Optional AI Enhancements

BriefCatch Editing helps develop legal writers of all ages and experience by teaching them how to craft persuasive narratives, present compelling arguments, and conclude with aplomb. BriefCatch plugs into Word and Outlook to analyze written documents and emails in real time, providing users with suggestions on an array of writing metrics. Those suggestions are then reinforced with cultivated examples of excellent prose from top legal writers like appellate advocates and Supreme Court Justices. 

BriefCatch can deliver editing suggestions in two ways:

First, BriefCatch uses traditional algorithmic methods to generate  suggestions based on tens of thousands of legal-writing rules. These suggestions are offered to all BriefCatch users and are delivered without the use of AI. And they cover a broad range of corrections from core grammar to elegant turns of phrase to even some basic Bluebooking. None of your data is ever stored.

Second, BriefCatch now offers the option of receiving AI-enhanced suggestions, including a more robust set of Bluebook citation corrections along with several contractual consistency edits. None of your data is stored or used for AI-model training. And we minimize how much data is sent—nothing more than necessary to produce quality suggestions.

BriefChat Advisor (Fully Optional AI Feature)

BriefChat is an interactive writing advisor that lives in Word and Outlook. It provides real-time writing insights based on the expertise of BriefCatch’s founder—Ross Guberman. From introducing an issue on appeal to distinguishing authorities in one fell swoop, BriefChat has you covered. What’s more, BriefChat only has access to your prompts: It has no access to your Word document or Outlook message. And neither your prompts nor BriefChat’s responses are stored. Nor can anyone at BriefCatch see them.

Which AI services does BriefCatch use?

All BriefCatch AI processing happens in a private instance within Microsoft Azure, which uses secure connections to protect your data.

How do I enable BriefCatch’s AI features?

BriefCatch enterprise administrators must expressly activate AI features before they are available to an organization’s users. Features may be activated on a firm-wide basis or an individual basis. By default, individual BriefCatch users must authorize AI processing for each document unless they expressly activate automatic processing.

What happens to my data? 

We do not collect, log, or retain the text from your documents. As a result, no one can use, view, or reconstruct any of your document text at any point during processing. And all connections to and from BriefCatch’s products are encrypted—whether in transit or at rest. The only information BriefCatch retains is your credential information (like the name and email address you use to access the platform) per BriefCatch’s Privacy Policy.
